As soon as the engine shut off, silence crept in. It pressed down on Zack’s chest, almost suffocating him. He needed to get out of here before he went crazy. His hand went for the door, but Jake grabbed his arm. Zack shot him a glare, brushing off his hand, wondering what the issue could be this time. But then he saw it too. His stomach dropped as he looked at the figures of three more of the strange cloaked people. He noticed these were different. They were bigger and cloaked in a darker shade of gray. The hoods shadowed each of their faces and their hands and feet were invisible. Two carried weapons. One held a sword, engulfed in a dark purple energy, and the other a giant hammer, surrounded by the same substance.My Review
“I don’t think you should have stopped, Jake.” Zack gulped.
“I didn’t,” Jake said as he turned the key in the ignition, but the car stayed quiet. There wasn’t even a click. “It’s dead!”
The people hovered closer. The giant hammer-wielding creature stopped at the side of the car. Zack’s side. Blood drained from Zack’s face as it lifted the hammer high above its shoulder.
“Drive, Jake! Drive!”
“I can’t. It won’t start!”
“Oh crap.” Zack ducked as the hammer swung down. He waited for the pain to sink in... For the car to explode... Anything. But when nothing happened, he sat up slowly. The car was still in one piece. He checked his body for any changes and relaxed. The hammer did no visible damage at all. “What’s going on?” a bewildered Zack asked.
“Whoa, it went right through! Did you see that?”
Zack didn’t answer, because first, he didn’t see, and second, one of the other people moved forward. This one held no weapon. It stopped in front of the car, standing with its face cast downward for what felt like forever, and then let loose a terrifying screech. The frequency was so high it nearly pierced his eardrums.
“Cover your ears!” Zack yelled as he covered his own with the palm of his hands, but it didn’t drive out the noise or stop the pain pulsing through his brain.
“It’s not working!” Jake said, looking right into the screamer’s face.
Instead of looking, Zack shut his eyes, thinking it would help if he didn’t see it.
“Can’t handle this, my... brain...” Jake groaned.
Zack jerked his head at the click of the car door, catching Jake stumbling out. “What the hell are you doing? Get back inside!” Zack yelled. “Are you crazy?”
Jake ignored him. He stumbled down the road a few feet before he stopped and looked back. His face was stripped of all emotion, his eyes still fixed on the screaming person who moved closer toward him. The other people followed. What’s so interesting about that thing’s face that Jake wasn’t running! Zack got out of the car to jerk him away, but he was too late.
The people were upon Jake before he could move. Let go of my brother, you freaks! Zack wanted to scream, but his voice refused. The two carrying weapons swung them down through his body with sheer force. As Jake yelled, a wave of cold rushed through Zack’s body, chilling him to the bone.
“No!” Shaking, he stepped forward. “Jake!” He forced a yell as he gasped for air. His heart pumped wildly in his chest. This couldn’t be happening. Not to Jake. Not his brother.
Ok, so this is a short first novel beginning the series. I won't lie, the creeptastic is pretty awesome. I was so intrigued by the Vengeful. And wait til you find out who and what they are and how they came to be. I loved this story and how, even though it's short, it leave you wanting more and being satisfied at the same time.
Our main character happens to be Zack, but there's other good characters in there. You see, it all started with a freak lightning storm. And Zack fell into a parallel universe. It looks just like his, except majorly creepy with Vengeful. Even his dad is there, except his dad isn't his dad here. Maybe I shouldn't tell you too much because I don't want to spoil things. It gets complicated when Zack wants to rescue his brother but two warring sides are telling him two different things. Who's right, or wrong?
I can't tell you! LOL You gotta read this one on your own! Also, if you check out the author's website, she has some cool links to get freebies. You should check it :) With that said, I liked the writing style. I liked the action that surrounded Zack, poor kid, he was just a computer nerd. But not anymore!! Well done, and I look forward to seeing where this one is going to go from here! I want book two! :) 4.5 PAWS!!
Author Interview
1.
First, tell me a little about your book and why
you wanted to write this particular story…. The Vengeful is the first novella in a Young Adult paranormal, fantasy
series. It tells the story of Zack, a teenage guy, fighting his way through an
alternative dimension full of reaper-like creatures to save his brother’s life.
In this world of deceit, he must put his trust in the right person, or end up
dooming the human race. Why I wanted to write it? I had to! When an idea pop
into my mind, I get so excited I have to write or it drives me crazy forever.
2. Do you recall
how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know? Hmm, good question. I’ve been writing ever since
Primary School. It started with lazy days, writing fan fiction, based on Dragon
Ball Z, with a friend. We would scribble down a short story and trade papers afterwards.
Since then I wanted to do more than writing about stories that didn’t belong to
me. So I created my own. I never finished a whole book though, until one day…
3. What inspired
you to write your first book and what was it? The game (also a novel), Alan Wake, inspired me to take my writing
seriously. I got so absorbed in Alan’s life as a writer that the excitement
bubbled inside me so much that I decided, “I want to write like him. I want my
stories to feel as real as Alan’s did for me.” I started my first full book a
few days after I finished the game. A Young Adult story about a girl’s family
struggles, growing more complicated when she finds a magical bracelet in the
backyard. While wearing this bracelet,
she stumble upon a secret room that’s hidden from normal vision. Only her
soon-to-be stepfather has the answers. I
hope to have this ready to publish sometime this year J
4. Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life? No, I wish. The Vengeful is pure fiction.
But someday I plan to write a book on someone I know :P

Out of all the characters in your book, who is
your favorite to write? There’s always a fan favorite to read about but
sometimes it’s the side characters that are the most fun J Definitely Vale. Writing about a Vengeful is something new and
intriguing.
6.
How did you come up with the lead character(s)? My characters create themselves. Zack was
there already when I got the idea for The Vengeful. I can’t tell my characters
how they should be. I just name them and then they shape themselves through the
scenes playing in my mind.
7.
Is your book part of a series, and if so, how
many will there be? Yes, this is the
first book. I’m aiming for a trilogy, but depends on how many people like the
books.
8.
What are you working on now? I’m working on three Young Adult fantasies,
including the sequel of The Vengeful. I want to have at least two of them ready
to publish this year.
9. How do you
chose when/which characters die in your books? I don’t like to kill characters. It’s too much like killing a part of
myself. I only do it if it’s necessary for the plot.
10. Who do you
look up to as a writer? As a child, I
looked up to Meg Cabot. She will always be one of my favorite authors. Marie Lu
recently wow’d me with her style and choice of words in The Young Elites. I can
learn a lot from her.
11. If you had to
do it all over again, would you change anything in your book? I think a book can always improve, but I
wouldn’t change anything about the story. I like how it turned out.
12. Is there
anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? Describing things! And finding the right words to fit the scenes playing off in my mind!
It frustrates me so much when I can’t pull out something that is perfect in my
mind to be as perfect on paper.
13. Who designed
the cover? And do you help with them? Taria
Reed. She’s amazing. I love how she managed to bring out my story visually. All
I did was fill out a cover art form and she took it from there.
14. Did you learn
anything from writing your books and what was it? I learned that writing is a lifetime journey. If you want to write, you
have to be willing to learn. It’s not easy and consumes most of your time. It
can take you soaring through the clouds or plummeting down to the depths of
hell. But when you reach the end result of your work, you realize that being a
writer is worth every drop of sweat!
15.If you could
be one of your characters, who would you chose? Vale. I would love to have his powers of teleportation, to be free to
go wherever I want to.
16. Are there any
books you think some of us should read, just because? Too many to name! Divergent, The Young Elites, The Mediator, Alan Wake,
Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Inkheart… Don’t ask me why. Just read them!
17. We all love
Supernatural, so which Winchester brother is for you? Uh… I haven’t seen
Supernatural yet *shrinks away* :s
18. Do you have
anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Yes, I want to say thank you for sitting through my interview. And if
you’ve read my book, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I loved writing it. You’re
all awesome! J
19. This
or that...
A. Coffee addict? If Latte counts, then YES. Can’t live
without it.
B. What’s your favorite alcoholic
beverage. Hmm, I don’t really drink
much. I like ciders though.
C. Favorite Food? My mom’s homemade Pizza! :D
D. If you had to chose Coffee or
Chocolate? –don’t laugh, I don’t like chocolate so it’s quite easy for me, but
a LOT of people NEED both LOL Wait…
what?? There’s someone on the planet that don’t like chocolate?? WOW!! :O Ugh…
this is such a hard choice… Chocolate flavored coffee? :3
E. Beach or mountains? Mountains. The view, the fresh air, the
silence… Would be a nice place to lose myself in writing.
F. Winter or summer? Winter.
A cold, rainy, winter day to snuggle up in blankets with a good book J
G. vampires or werewolves? Vampires. I love anything that possess
powers.
H. Cold or hot? Cold, with a little heat now and then.
I. Favorite color? Purple.
J. Night or day? Night. The time when my mind overflow with
ideas.
K. Moonlight or sunlight? Moonlight. Watching the moon and stars makes
me wonder about the universe and all its secrets.
L. Bad boy or good guy next door? A bit of both. ;)
